Travel Funding

The IIS pro­vides gen­er­ous fund­ing each year for stu­dents who reg­u­lar­ly par­tic­i­pate in IIS & IISSO activ­i­ties to trav­el to con­fer­ences (Vir­tu­al / In-Per­son) to present their research. Announce­ments regard­ing upcom­ing dead­lines are sent to the IISSO email list­serv (con­tact the Pres­i­dent to request that your name be added to that list).

Note that each stu­dent may only sub­mit two fund­ed appli­ca­tions per year, and awards are capped at $750 for domes­tic trav­el and $1000 for inter­na­tion­al trav­el.

To be eli­gi­ble to receive trav­el fund­ing for aca­d­e­m­ic events, the recip­i­ent MUST:

• 1. Be an under­grad­u­ate stu­dent or grad­u­ate stu­dent work­ing with an IIS-affil­i­at­ed Fac­ul­ty mem­ber.
     • Stu­dents must be approved by the IIS-affil­i­at­ed fac­ul­ty mem­ber as a cur­rent and active par­tic­i­pant in the research to be pre­sent­ed.
  2. Be a pre­sent­ing author or co-author of an accept­ed pre­sen­ta­tion.
  3. Reg­u­lar­ly par­tic­i­pate in IIS and IISSO activ­i­ties.
  4. Be the only per­son from the sub­mit­ted project to receive fund­ing. Only 1 per­son will be fund­ed per project sub­mis­sion (e.g., if you are the sec­ond author, but the first author will present the project, only the first author will receive fund­ing).

IISSO trav­el fund­ing is not guar­an­teed. Awards are based on infor­ma­tion entered in the appli­ca­tion, then cal­cu­lat­ed from attendance/participation at IIS & IISSO events, includ­ing IISSO meet­ings, Cog­ni­tive Sci­ence Sem­i­nar pub­lic talks, the Speed Date/Research Fair, and IISSO guest speak­er lunch­es. Award amounts are sub­ject to avail­able funds on a first-come, first-served basis. The max­i­mum amount award­ed per stu­dent is deter­mined on a semes­ter basis by the IISSO Trav­el Fund­ing Com­mit­tee. Stu­dents will be noti­fied of their award sta­tus by email after the com­mit­tee meets for review.

Stu­dents may include excused absence(s) in their totals when esti­mat­ing attend­ed events if the excusal was received pri­or to the event. Oth­er deduc­tions may apply, includ­ing mis­takes on the appli­ca­tion, if the con­fer­ence does not pub­lish pro­ceed­ings, and attend­ing a con­fer­ence or event (e.g., work­shop) with­out a pre­sen­ta­tion.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE:

All appli­ca­tions must be received at least 30 days before the begin­ning day of the conference/event for domes­tic trav­el and 60 days before the first day for inter­na­tion­al trav­el (this includes week­ends). This is regard­less of the pri­or­i­ty dead­line for that semes­ter or when you receive noti­fi­ca­tion of accep­tance to the conference/event. You may need to apply for trav­el fund­ing before you receive noti­fi­ca­tion of accep­tance if that falls with­in the 30 days.

Appli­ca­tions received less than 30 days before the start of the conference/event will not be accept­ed.

Your abil­i­ty to apply your IISSO trav­el fund­ing award toward your trav­el expens­es is con­tin­gent upon being accept­ed to the conference/event. This means that if you receive a pend­ing trav­el fund­ing award but are lat­er noti­fied by the conference/event that you are not accept­ed, please noti­fy Finan­cial Ser­vices Asso­ciate and the IISSO Pres­i­dent or Trea­sur­er, as funds are not trans­fer­able between conferences/events.

IISSO offers a peer-reviewed Thesis/Dissertation fund­ing award. The pur­pose of this pro­gram is to enable more self-direct­ed stu­dent research and to intro­duce stu­dents to the process of writ­ing pro­pos­als. Stu­dents are eli­gi­ble for fund­ing after defend­ing their thesis/dissertation pro­pos­al.
