Travel Funding
The IIS provides generous funding each year for students who regularly participate in IIS & IISSO activities to travel to conferences (Virtual / In-Person) to present their research. Announcements regarding upcoming deadlines are sent to the IISSO email listserv (contact the President to request that your name be added to that list).
Note that each student may only submit two funded applications per year, and awards are capped at $750 for domestic travel and $1000 for international travel.
To be eligible to receive travel funding for academic events, the recipient MUST:
-
- Be an undergraduate student or graduate student working with an IIS-affiliated Faculty member.
- Students must be approved by the IIS-affiliated faculty member as a current and active participant in the research to be presented.
- Be a presenting author or co-author of an accepted presentation.
- Regularly participate in IIS and IISSO activities.
- Be the only person from the submitted project to receive funding. Only 1 person will be funded per project submission (e.g., if you are the second author, but the first author will present the project, only the first author will receive funding).
- Be an undergraduate student or graduate student working with an IIS-affiliated Faculty member.
IISSO travel funding is not guaranteed. Awards are based on information entered in the application, then calculated from attendance/participation at IIS & IISSO events, including IISSO meetings, Cognitive Science Seminar public talks, the Speed Date/Research Fair, and IISSO guest speaker lunches. Award amounts are subject to available funds on a first-come, first-served basis. The maximum amount awarded per student is determined on a semester basis by the IISSO Travel Funding Committee. Students will be notified of their award status by email after the committee meets for review.
Students may include excused absence(s) in their totals when estimating attended events if the excusal was received prior to the event. Other deductions may apply, including mistakes on the application, if the conference does not publish proceedings, and attending a conference or event (e.g., workshop) without a presentation.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE:
All applications must be received at least 30 days before the beginning day of the conference/event for domestic travel and 60 days before the first day for international travel (this includes weekends). This is regardless of the priority deadline for that semester or when you receive notification of acceptance to the conference/event. You may need to apply for travel funding before you receive notification of acceptance if that falls within the 30 days.
Applications received less than 30 days before the start of the conference/event will not be accepted.
Your ability to apply your IISSO travel funding award toward your travel expenses is contingent upon being accepted to the conference/event. This means that if you receive a pending travel funding award but are later notified by the conference/event that you are not accepted, please notify Financial Services Associate and the IISSO President or Treasurer, as funds are not transferable between conferences/events.
Please fill out your form carefully and read all directions before beginning your application! Any questions regarding travel funding should be directed to the IISSO Treasurer.

Thesis/Dissertation & Publication Funding
IISSO offers a peer-reviewed Thesis/Dissertation funding award. The purpose of this program is to enable more self-directed student research and to introduce students to the process of writing proposals. Students are eligible for funding after defending their thesis/dissertation proposal.
The full details of the program and associated forms can be found here. Students can not receive funding for resources that are currently available either through the University of Memphis or the IIS. Please email all application materials to the Research Coordinator.
Applications are accepted on a rolling deadline.
