General Questions: Membership & Getting Involved
How do I become an IISSO member?
Join through the University’s TigerZone or via sign-up links at IISSO events.
Does it cost anything to join?
No. Membership is free; there are no dues.
Who can join IISSO?
All undergrad or grad students affiliated with IIS—or strongly interested in IIS focus areas.
What happens after I join?
You’ll be assigned a departmental ambassador, enrolled in the mailing list and TigerZone, and receive an official welcome email. Questions can be directed to your ambassador and/or the president.
Who is my departmental ambassador, and how can I contact them?
Each new member is assigned an ambassador; ambassadors oversee members in their department. Direct questions to your ambassador (or the president if you’re unsure who that is). The document does not list individual contact details
Advisor Affiliation
What should I do if my advisor isn’t IIS-affiliated?
Funding normally requires working with an IIS affiliate. If your advisor isn’t affiliated, you may still be eligible if you’re an IISSO officer; otherwise, contact the IIS Director through the president to present your case (especially if your research is IIS-focused).
How can my advisor become IIS-affiliated?
You can write the IIS Director about steps for your advisor to become an affiliate.
Events & Activities
What is the Cognitive Science Seminar?
The Cognitive Science Seminar is one of the crown jewels of the Institute. It is both a course offering and a public lecture series. Each semester’s Seminar is organized around a different thematic area and offers seminars by national and international experts in the field. Talk are on Wednesday’s from 4 pm to 5 pm and simulcast via TEAMs
What kinds of events does IISSO host?
- ISSO Research Fair (typically near the end of Fall & Spring), Lightning Talks, Workshops, and other academic/career events.
- Outreach/resource-fair participation via Recruitment and Social roles.

Funding & Support
How do I apply for travel funding to attend a conference?
Apply via the link on the IISSO website (applications are accepted throughout the semester). The Treasurer distributes criteria/procedures at the start of the year. Check that you (or your advisor’s students) are on the IIS-approved list for travel funding.
What is the travel funding process?
The Treasurer reviews applications, may request more info, notifies awardees, forwards details to IIS admin, keeps records each round, and updates officers and communications.
What other types of funding are available (e.g., thesis/dissertation funding, publication costs)?
- Thesis & Dissertation Award / Publication cost (once per program)
- Travel Fund (twice per academic year)
- Research support (via IIS Director’s office)
Who is eligible for IISSO funding?
(a) IISSO members working with an IIS affiliate; (b) IISSO officers (even if not with an affiliate); © others may petition the IIS Director (through the president) if research is IIS-focused.
Is funding guaranteed if I apply?
No. Meeting requirements does not guarantee funding.
Research Opportunities
How can I participate in the IISSO Research Fair?
Members can participate; the Research Coordinator sets submission guidelines and timelines and manages logistics—watch for calls and submit per those guidelines.
Can I collaborate with researchers from other departments?
Yes, members have opportunities to collaborate across different fields.
