The IIS is an interdisciplinary research institute founded in 1985 to serve as a source of collaboration for faculty and students studying language, learning, and artificial intelligence. Our flagship course, the Cognitive Science Seminar, runs each semester with a public lecture from 4-5pm. Our offices are on the 3rd floor of the new STEM building at The University of Memphis.

We have eight Core Faculty and more than 40 Faculty Affiliates from departments such as Physics, Psychology, Education, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Linguistics, Computer Science, and Philosophy.
Each semester, we host Research Lightning Talks and a Student Research Forum. In Spring 2025, our Research Lightning Talks are on April 4th from 4-7pm in ERIC 306/308.
